Center for Excellence in Education Names Top Twenty U.S. High School Finalists
in 2019 USA Biology Olympiad

McLean, VA (April 26, 2019)--  The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) has announced the 20 top high school students for the 17th Annual USA Biology Olympiad (USABO) National Finals. The students will meet June 22 to July 6 at the University of California at San Diego (UC San Diego) for 10 days of intensive biology education and high-level laboratory training.  Those studies will be followed by two days of testing to determine the USABO’s ‘Dream Team’—four students who will represent the United States as Team USA at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) from July 14-21 in Szeged, Hungary.

“These students are the highest achieving biology students in the United States,” said Joann DiGennaro, President of CEE.  “CEE is proud to work with UC San Diego to prepare the USABO National Finalists for international competition.”

“We look forward to hosting the USA Biology Olympiad finalists, and welcome the energy and drive that these stellar students bring to this national event and to campus,” said Kit Pogliano, Dean of UC San Diego’s Division of Biological Sciences.  “The biological research and teaching facilities at UC San Diego and our surrounding institutions provide an ideal location to host this program, and to prepare biology superstars from around the country for the international competition.”

More than 10,000 high school biology students from across the country registered for the USABO Open Exam, according to Kakoli Mitra, CEE’s manager of USABO.  “The mission of the USABO is to encourage excellence in biology education throughout the United States and to challenge students and their teachers to reach the gold standard in biology,” said Mitra.
